Introducing The 5 Shifts: Changing How We Change

Mar 24, 2025 | Teams

Have you been tasked with leading a change initiative or looking to implement new practices? Whether you are shaping workplace culture or driving greater productivity, you have the opportunity to make a lasting impact.

However, this is often easier said than done. Change is hard, and although you may approach change management enthusiastically, you will likely face a few challenges along the way. In fact, up to 70% of change initiatives fail to achieve their desired outcome. This is because many change efforts are focused on pushing out content rather than engaging with the people most affected by change.

For successful change management, we must shift our approach. In this blog series, we will explore the five shifts that drive organizational change. These shifts will help you create lasting business results while keeping your team engaged and committed.

Shift 1: From Event To Journey. True Change happens between events, not just during them. A Journey-based approach with Learn, Do, Inspire activities creates a continuous rhythm of transformation.

Shift 1: From Event to Journey

Organizations often create isolated events to introduce change initiatives, such as kick-off meetings, training sessions, and feedback forms. While these events are helpful, they do not drive the change itself. The real transformation happens in the time between events, as teams and individuals process new mindsets and behaviors.

To create lasting change, shifting from an event-driven approach to recognizing change as a continuous journey is essential. This means creating patterns of activities that support learning, application, and inspiration over time. The Learn, Do, Inspire framework is a structured approach to managing change. Learning involves providing opportunities for individuals to gain knowledge and deeper insights about change. By Doing, leaders can focus on creating ways for people to apply what they have learned in their normal day-to-day routine. Finally, Inspire relates to celebrating successes around change, which continues to motivate employees throughout the process.

With careful consideration, it is possible to create a roadmap that combines both event-based and non-event-based activities to better drive change and adoption throughout the organization.
